SYSPRO and the Cloud
The terms “Cloud” or “Cloud Computing” are creating quite a buzz in Information Technology circles. Many companies have begun offering cloud computing services, and these offerings have been generating a lot of interest. This new trend in computing is too big for businesses to ignore.
Cloud computing refers to utilizing a network (most commonly the internet) to connect to resources that are in “the cloud.” Essentially, connecting to applications in the cloud allows a user to carry out numerous functions using something as simple as a netbook computer. The cloud makes it possible to use applications without having them installed on your computer, making an internet connection a gateway to all your computing needs. This type of application hosting is also referred to as Software as a Service, or SaaS.
Now that the cloud has been in existence for a few years, ERP vendors are beginning to hop on the bandwagon. According to a study by Aberdeen Group, there was a 70% increase in willingness to consider a SaaS deployment of ERP solutions in 2010. Granted, the numbers of respondents who were willing to consider a SaaS deployment was still only 39%, which may have been due in large part to the limited number of ERP systems with cloud offerings. SYSPRO is proud to be one of the pioneers of cloud computing ERP solutions.
On May 24 of this year, SYSPRO announced the official launch of SYSPRO BusinessLive. BusinessLive is a hosted version of the SYSPRO ERP product that is available for a monthly subscription price. The unique thing about this product is that SYSPRO manages a separate instance of the software for each customer, so the application is still fully customizable. Because the instances are kept separate for each customer, it is also possible to move from an on-premise deployment into the cloud, or vice versa. This also allows the user to retain control of when upgrades and maintenance take place.
SYSPRO BusinessLive is a great solution for those companies that don’t wish to make a large up-front investment on the necessary hardware to run the SYSRPO ERP solution effectively. It can also benefit those current SYSPRO clients in need of new hardware, but without the proper staff or resources to upgrade the old hardware. The flexibility of being able to move between the cloud and an onsite installation provides peace of mind that whatever decision is made based on the situation today is not binding in one year or five years down the road.
